When someone is gluten intolerant there are several symptoms that can occur and I have had all of these.  When I eat gluten free I have none of them.

  1. Depression, cry easily
  2. Lack of enjoyment in life
  3. Deep pimples
  4. Skin rashes, surface pimples, especially face & chin
  5. Itching skin
  6. Constipation
  7. Hemorrhoids, when eating a lot of gluten
  8. Intestinal difficulties, pain
  9. Rash on the scalp, foul smelling skin surface even after a shower
  10. Oily hair and skin
  11. Joint pain
  12. Joint swelling
  13. Fatigue
  14. Excessive sleepiness
  15. Brain “fog”

In my next post I will describe what happened to these symptoms when I gave up gluten.

Have you found out yet how hard it is to go out to eat if you have to eat gluten free? I love Italian food, but going to an Italian restaurant in particular is always a struggle. I don’t have celiac disease but I am gluten intolerant so I have to stay away from all that bread and pasta. I have found that they most of the time they have bean soup, salads, and side dishes of vegetables that can be ordered without pasta. I found that Nino’s Italian restaurant in Baton Rouge  has gluten free pasta. They don’t advertise it, but you can ask for it. It could be that many Italian restaurants have gluten free pasta but don’t advertise it because it makes them look like they cater to a specialty audience. We need to start asking for gluten free pasta more. I love the typical Italian dishes with a red sauce but it is frustrating when you can’t order any because it is ladled over regular pasta. I suppose I could order the dish and ask for the pasta be on the side and not eat it. I might try that next. Another restaurant in Baton Rouge that has gluten free pasta is Oscar’s Pizza and Ice Cream. They are working on a gluten free pizza dough as well. So maybe next time I go, they will have gluten free pizza available. Domino’s has gluten free pizza crust and it’s not bad. I usually make my own gluten free pizza when I have a hankering for one.

A new study done by Loma Linda University on Adventists living in the US and Canada found that the Adventists live longer and are healthier than omnivores. They weight less, have less body fat, less hypertension and less diabetes.   http://www.foodnavigator.com/Science-Nutrition/Vegetarians-have-longer-life-expectancy-than-meat-eaters-finds-study?utm_source=copyright&utm_medium=OnSite&utm_campaign=copyright

Vegetarian men live on average 9.5 yrs longer than omnivores and vegetarian women live 6.1 more yrs. Vegetarian diet provides important nutrients and nonnutritive phytochemicals that act as antioxidants and protect the body in many ways from oxidative damage. Oxidative damage ages and is the cause of  many of the chronic diseases we see in people as they age such as diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer, hypertension and more. Reducing the intake of saturated fats, meat protein that can have harmful products particularly when the meat is grilled and reducing the total intake of fat results in all these beneficial effects seen in this study.

Research suggest that we eat 5 to 9 fruits and vegetables a day and this is also promoted by More Matters http://www.fruitsandveggiesmorematters.org/. This and other studies on vegetarians seem to give credence to this suggestion. Check out some of the recipes on the More Matters website.
